Why is My Samoyed Not Eating, Drinking, and Only Sleeping? How to Solve It

If your Samoyed is not eating, not drinking, and only sleeping, it's often due to a cold or fever. You should take its temperature. However, it could also be because it's bored with its routine. In that case, try taking your Samoyed for a walk. If your dog also has symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, it might have gastroenteritis. If your dog has a fever, eye or nasal discharge, and diarrhea, be alert for canine distemper or parvovirus.

Reasons and Solutions for a Samoyed Not Eating, Drinking, and Only Sleeping

1. Cold or Fever

If your dog suddenly stops eating, is lethargic, has a dry or warm nose, and an abnormal temperature, it might have a cold or fever. You can take its temperature to confirm. For a cold, you can administer a half dose of children's cold medicine and ensure it stays warm. If your dog has a fever, it might require anti-inflammatory medication. You can also try cooling it down by applying alcohol to its paw pads and belly.

2. Extreme Boredom

Sudden lethargy and loss of appetite in your dog can also stem from a monotonous lifestyle and lack of stimulation. This often happens when owners don't play with their dogs enough, ignoring their needs. To fix this, try taking your dog out for more frequent walks and engage in active play sessions. Once your dog's life becomes more interesting, its appetite and energy levels should return to normal.

3. Gastroenteritis

If your dog is not eating, lethargic, and also experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, be wary of gastroenteritis. If you suspect this, start by withholding food and water for 24 hours. Then, administer anti-inflammatory medication, followed by probiotics after two hours. If the symptoms persist after three days, seek veterinary attention.

4. Canine Distemper or Parvovirus

Lethargy and lack of appetite could also signal more serious conditions like canine distemper or parvovirus. These are often accompanied by eye and nasal discharge, repeated vomiting and diarrhea, and fever. You can purchase test kits for these viruses from a pet store to test your dog at home. If the tests are positive, immediate veterinary care is essential.
