China boasts a rich heritage of diverse dog breeds, each with its unique characteristics and history. Some of the notable Chinese dog breeds include the Pekingese, Pug, Chinese Rural Dog (also known as the Chinese Native Dog), Tibetan Mastiff, Chow Chow, Lhasa Apso, Shar-Pei, Tibetan Spaniel, Chinese Crested Dog, and Shih Tzu. While China is also home to many excellent breeds from other countries, these 46 main native breeds are dispersed throughout the nation, each adapted to its environment.

Five Common Chinese Dog Breeds

Let's explore some of the most well-known breeds:

1. Pekingese

The Pekingese, also known as the Lion Dog, is an ancient breed from China with a history spanning over four thousand years. This breed is known for its compact and well-balanced structure, with a heavier front end and lighter hindquarters. Pekingese dogs are spirited, showy, lively, and intelligent, with a distinctive appearance resembling a lion. Their courage, boldness, and self-respect are more significant than their beauty or elegance.

2. Pug

Experts believe that the Pug originated in Tibet, China. The early Pugs were slightly larger than they are today. In the mid-16th century, the first Pugs were exported to France. By the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company introduced the Pug to various parts of the world. Their numbers had declined dramatically in other countries until the late 19th century, when the Pug Dog Club was established, which led to a steady increase in population and improvements to breed standards. The Pug was also known as the Dutch dog, because it was favored by nobility in the Netherlands. It belongs to the same system as the Pekingese.

3. Chinese Rural Dog

The Chinese Rural Dog, often referred to as the 'Tu Gou' (土狗), is a native breed to China. These dogs are well-adapted to the local climate and can survive more independently than other breeds. Chinese Rural Dogs are common throughout Southeast Asia.

4. Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff originated in the high-altitude regions of the Tibetan Plateau in China. They are considered guardians and protectors by the Tibetan people and are often referred to as "Heavenly Dogs". Harsh climatic conditions and tough living environments contributed to the Tibetan Mastiff’s fierce appearance, courage, and unwavering loyalty.

5. Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is an ancient breed from Tibet, China, with a history dating back at least 2000 years. Artifacts from the Han Dynasty depict them. Their original name is ‘獢獢,’ and ‘Chow Chow’ is the name that was adopted after they were brought to foreign countries and then back to China. While primarily found in colder regions, they are now distributed worldwide. They are well known for their unique look, including a lion-like mane and a distinctive blue-black tongue.
