The Correct Way to Hold a Cockatiel

When handling a cockatiel, you can use two fingers to gently secure its head while using your remaining fingers to encompass its body. If you're concerned about potentially hurting your bird by using your hands directly, you can opt for using a towel. Slowly and carefully wrap the towel around its body from behind. It's important to be quick, as the cockatiel might resist if it feels restrained.

As a cockatiel owner, you will inevitably need to hold your bird at some point. This could be for various reasons, such as trimming its nails or feathers, administering medical treatment, or tending to an injury like a broken blood feather. When holding your cockatiel, it's crucial to do it properly. Not only should you ensure the bird can't escape or injure itself or others, but you must also monitor its breathing. Be alert for signs of distress, like labored breathing or weakness.

How to Properly Hold a Cockatiel

1. The Finger Grip Method: Position your index and middle finger in a V-shape. Gently use these two fingers to secure the cockatiel’s head just below its jaw. Use your remaining fingers to gently cradle the rest of its body.

2. Using a Towel: You can also use a towel to capture and hold your cockatiel. Start by gently controlling the head. Then, slowly bring the towel towards your bird from behind. Carefully place the towel over its body, paying special attention to the head position. Then, secure the head with the towel and wrap the towel around its body, being mindful of its flapping wings.

3. Towel Wrap and Lift Method: Hold the middle of the towel, and quickly and firmly grasp the head. Swiftly wrap the towel around the rest of the cockatiel's body before attempting to pick it up. Never lift the bird solely by its head. Always support its body, as it will attempt to flap its wings. Use your free hand and gently and firmly wrap the wings with the towel. This will prevent unnecessary flapping and ensure safety for both you and your bird.If you enjoyed this, try:Pet Naming
