Will Swallows Die if They Eat Millet?

No, swallows will not die from eating millet. They can eat millet, as well as insects and wheat.

What Do Swallows Eat?

Young swallows primarily consume foods like grasshoppers, mosquitoes, flies, and caterpillars. If you're raising swallows at home, you can catch grasshoppers and earthworms in fields or buy mealworms at the market. While they can consume grains like millet and wheat, these should only be given occasionally.

Swallows are Not Random Feeders

Swallows do not fly around aimlessly with their mouths open, randomly ingesting airborne plankton. Instead, they actively hunt specific prey. They mainly feed on airborne invertebrates, primarily insects like mosquitoes and fruit flies.

Plant Matter in Swallow Diets

During times when insects are scarce, swallows might consume alternative food sources. Almost all swallow species primarily eat airborne invertebrates, with insects being their main food source. Plant matter appears in the diets of very few species, and even then in small amounts.

Exceptions in Swallow Diet

Currently, only the Tree Swallow regularly includes plant matter, primarily berries, in their diet. However, this only happens when insects are not readily available. Swallows are not opportunistic feeders; they actively pursue their prey rather than randomly eating what they encounter in the air.Free access here:Pet Grooming
