Bichon Frise Growth Chart: A Month-by-Month Guide (1-12 Months)

At one month old, Bichon Frise puppies are still nursing and quite small. By two months, they begin weaning and their milk teeth start to emerge. At three months, you can generally assess the quality of a Bichon’s conformation. The period between four and eight months is a rapid growth phase, and by nine to twelve months, their size usually stabilizes.

Bichon Frise Development: Month by Month

Let's delve deeper into what you can expect during the first year of a Bichon Frise puppy's life.

Month 1: The Newborn Phase

At one month old, a Bichon puppy is still reliant on its mother's milk. They are small and have a rounded appearance, and their typical Bichon characteristics are not yet fully developed. They are in the very early stages of life and need constant care and attention from their mother.

Month 2: Weaning Begins

By two months, the weaning process begins, and Bichon Frise puppies start gaining weight noticeably. Their milk teeth will start to come in, and you'll notice that their limbs begin to lengthen. This is a crucial period for socializing them gently with new environments and sounds.

Month 3: Assessing Conformation

By the time a Bichon puppy is three months old, you can typically start to see its structural qualities. This is when breeders and owners often evaluate a puppy's overall look and potential. They also become more playful and inquisitive.

Months 4-8: The Rapid Growth Spurt

The four to eight-month period is when Bichons experience significant growth. They will likely begin the teething phase, losing their puppy teeth and growing adult ones. This is an important time to provide plenty of chew toys to help alleviate any discomfort. During this phase, male Bichons' testicles should descend into the scrotum. You will also start seeing more of their adult personalities.

Months 9-12: Physical Stabilization

By the time a Bichon Frise reaches nine to twelve months old, they have largely stopped growing. Their size has mostly stabilized, though their physique can still be influenced by their diet and exercise. During this phase, it is important to continue good nutrition and exercise habits to ensure a healthy and balanced dog. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will prevent them from becoming overweight or underweight.
