How to Distinguish Between Male and Female Havanese Dogs

Distinguishing between male and female Havanese dogs can be done by examining their genitals and abdomen.

For adult dogs, identification is relatively straightforward. Male Havanese dogs will have testicles visible near their genitals. Female dogs will have visible nipples (mammary glands) on their abdomen. Additionally, male dogs typically lift a leg when urinating, while female dogs squat to urinate. This urination behavior is a key indicator.

When it comes to puppies, look for the penis in between the legs of a male puppy, they also tend to have a relatively clean abdomen covered by their coat. In contrast, female puppies will have flatter genital areas, and small spots visible on their abdomen which will later develop into their mammary glands. These abdominal spots are a good clue to look for when identifying the sex of a Havanese puppy.

Determining a dog’s sex isn't very difficult. Simply observe whether the small "pee-pee" is located on the stomach or close to the butt. If it's on the tummy, it's a male; if it's close to the rear end, it's a female. It's important to remember that both male and female puppies squat to urinate, young males will only start lifting their leg after five or six months old, which is important in Havanese puppy identification. Male puppies' penises are positioned between their legs, and their abdomen is smooth, often obscured by fur. Female puppies, on the other hand, have flatter genital areas and the aforementioned abdominal spots that will eventually develop into nipples.
