Can a Kitten Skip a Night Feeding? How to Tell If They're Hungry

It's not advisable for a kitten to skip a night feeding, especially if they are very young. Generally, kittens under one month old need to be fed every 3 to 4 hours. If they go without feeding for an entire night, they are highly susceptible to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and even shock. A kitten persistently meowing and following you around is a strong indicator of hunger.

During their nursing stage, kittens require frequent feedings because milk is easily digestible. If the kitten is nursing from their mother, they need feeding every 3-4 hours. For bottle-fed kittens, feeding every two hours is necessary. Considering a night of about ten hours, a prolonged period without feeding can lead to hypoglycemia and shock in these vulnerable kittens. For bottle-fed kittens, it’s recommended to add one or two more feedings during the night. Kittens that are a month old or more, can start eating solid food like kitten food and wet food, they can be fed before bedtime and then again early in the morning.

How to Determine If Your Kitten Is Hungry

You can gauge a kitten’s hunger by gently feeling their belly and noting the last time they ate. If the kitten is persistently meowing and following you, it is a strong sign they are hungry. When feeding kittens, remember to give them frequent, small meals to make sure they get all the nutrients they need.

For kittens two to three months old, aim for three to five meals per day. You can leave some dry food available in their bowl and supplement with some wet food, such as meat pate, when their appetite is poor. If your kitten persistently refuses to eat or starts vomiting, seek veterinary attention immediately.Related resource:Pet Training
