Hamsters and rats are fundamentally very different. Hamsters come in various fur colors and patterns. Their fur is typically soft, smooth, and clean. In contrast, rats usually have a single, gray fur color. You can use fur color as one method of identification before purchasing.

3. Tail:

Hamsters have short tails covered with fur, whereas rats have long, thin, and hairless tails. This is a key distinguishing factor.

4. Body Shape:

There are significant differences in body shape between hamsters and rats. Hamsters are short and round, with oval-shaped paws. Rats, on the other hand, are long, slender, and have long, narrow paws.

5. Legs:

Rats have long thighs and strong muscles, while hamsters have much thinner legs.

6. Eating Habits:

Hamsters are typically nocturnal, sleeping during the day and foraging at night. They have cheek pouches that extend from their molars to their shoulders, allowing them to carry large amounts of food. Hamsters enjoy foods like pumpkin, cabbage, and lettuce.
