Sudden Swelling on Dog's Cheek: Causes and What to Do

If you notice a sudden lump or swelling on one side of your dog's cheek, it could be due to various reasons like insect bites, abscesses, or dental issues. It’s essential to carefully assess the situation to determine the cause.

There are several potential causes for a sudden swelling on a dog's cheek, including but not limited to the following:

1. Insect Bites, Dental Problems, or Allergies: These are common culprits for sudden swelling in a dog's facial area.

2. Allergic Reactions: Your dog might be reacting to chemicals, food, plants, spider bites, bee stings, certain medications, or vaccines. These reactions can manifest as facial swelling.

3. Abscesses: Often resulting from bites from other animals, injuries, or dental diseases, abscesses are characterized by localized swelling, and often accompanied by a fever. If a tooth is involved, it can cause an abscess.

4. Dental Diseases: Issues such as fractured teeth or gum disease can develop into periodontal disease or tooth root abscesses, leading to swelling in the cheek area.

5. Tumors: Growths in the facial region can cause swelling, which may require diagnosis through veterinarian examination.

6. Inflammation of the Mandibular Glands: Swelling in the cheek might be a result of inflammation in the mandibular glands.

In severe cases, surgical intervention might be necessary. It's recommended to take your dog to a veterinarian to get a professional diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
