Is Daily Fish Oil Good for Cats? Proper Dosage and Feeding Guide
It's generally not recommended to give your cat fish oil every day. However, when supplementing with fish oil, it's crucial to adhere to the recommended dosage to avoid issues like fatty deposits. A frequency of 2-3 times per week is often sufficient.

Fish oil is well-known for its benefits for cats, including aiding in skin cell repair, reducing shedding, and promoting a shiny and healthy coat. However, it's essential to control the dosage carefully. Overfeeding fish oil can lead to fatty deposits. As mentioned, 2-3 times a week is a good guideline. Excessive consumption can also result in vitamin E deficiency and cause gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. Moreover, fish oil, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, is prone to oxidation, and should always be administered with Vitamin E. This counteracts oxidation, and without it, cats risk developing steatitis (fat inflammation).
Properly Administering Fish Oil to Cats
Using MHS (妙手医生) fish oil softgels as an example, the recommended dosage varies based on your cat's weight. For cats weighing less than 2.5KG, give one softgel per day. For cats between 2.5 and 5KG, give two softgels daily. Cats between 5-10KG can have three softgels a day. If your cat is between 10-15KG, administer four softgels daily, and for cats weighing above 15KG, five softgels is generally appropriate.
You can feed your cat the softgel directly or mix it into their dry food. Alternatively, you can soak the softgel in warm water, prick it with a needle or cut with scissors to release the oil and either directly administer it into your cat's mouth or mix it into their wet or dry food.
