Do Shar-Peis Only Recognize One Owner? How Do You Know When They've Bonded?
Shar-Peis typically bond strongly with one primary owner at a time. While they can form attachments with multiple people throughout their lives, their trust and dependence on their first owner is often different from subsequent ones. This means a Shar-Pei can have multiple 'owners' in their lifetime, but the depth of their bond may vary.

Contrary to the popular belief that dogs only have one owner for life, they can form bonds with several people. However, the level of trust and dependence on the first owner is usually significantly greater. During any given period, a Shar-Pei will primarily recognize one person as their main owner. In a large family, they might show affection to everyone who treats them well. Still, they usually consider one person as the true owner. While a Shar-Pei can re-bond with a new owner after losing their previous one, this process can be emotionally difficult for the dog and may take a considerable amount of time to re-establish trust.
How to Tell If a Dog Recognizes You as Their Owner
1. **Obedience to Your Commands:** When a dog identifies you as their owner, they will generally obey your commands and instructions.
2. **Exposing Their Belly:** This is a classic sign of affection and trust. A dog that rolls over and shows you their belly is inviting you to interact and usually enjoys a belly rub. This indicates they have accepted you as their owner.
3. **Loyal and Gentle Gaze:** If a dog sees you as their owner, they will often look at you with a very soft and loyal gaze. They will be gentle, sometimes even sheepish, and will wag their tail, stay close to you, and refrain from barking at you unnecessarily.
4. **Remembering the Home and Greeting You:** A dog that recognizes you as their owner will memorize the location of your home. They will be able to find their way back and will often greet you at the door upon your return.
