Ragdoll Cat Short Hair: Causes and When to Expect Fluff

A Ragdoll cat having short hair can be due to various reasons, such as shedding periods or nutritional deficiencies. Owners can stimulate hair growth by regularly grooming their cat and ensuring they receive proper nutrition. Generally, Ragdoll cats begin to develop their full coat, often referred to as 'fluffing out', around four months of age.

Reasons for Short Hair in Ragdoll Cats

1.Shedding Period: A Ragdoll cat may appear to have shorter hair during a shedding period. As they lose their old coat, they are simultaneously growing new hair. This process can temporarily make their fur seem less full. Genetic Predisposition: If a Ragdoll cat inherits short-hair genes from its parents, it might express this trait, resulting in shorter fur. Delayed Coat Development: Sometimes, a Ragdoll cat simply hasn't reached its full coat potential yet. Providing the necessary nutrition can help their coat develop over time.

2. Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate nutrition is a major factor in a Ragdoll’s coat development. Diet plays a crucial role in achieving that desired full coat. A cat food with a protein content of 30% or higher is ideal. Higher protein and meat content will yield better results in terms of fur growth. Fish-based cat food is excellent; fish protein is easily absorbed, and fish oil also promotes healthy hair.

Additionally, cat-specific lecithin products are specially formulated for hair growth and coat enhancement. They often include ingredients like seal oil and salmon oil, which are beneficial for promoting fur growth in cats. Regular brushing is essential during this time, and the gentle massage from the brush can also stimulate hair growth.

When Do Ragdoll Cats Start to Fluff Out?

Kittens typically start to grow their adult coat after four months of age. This happens after they have shed their kitten fur. Large cat breeds, like Ragdolls, tend to mature later. Factoring in variables such as the summer shedding season, it is possible for a Ragdoll to start fluffing out anytime between 4 to 18 months.Related resource:Pet Training
