Why Chow Chows Are Banned and Their Possible Tibetan Mastiff Lineage

Chow Chows are often banned due to their large size, which doesn't comply with regulations; their aggressive and volatile temperament, posing a threat to public safety; and their stubborn and headstrong nature, making them difficult to train. It is rumored that Chow Chows share about half of their lineage with Tibetan Mastiffs, making them close relatives, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Reasons for Banning Chow Chows

1. Large Size

Chow Chows were originally bred as hunting dogs, and their size is not small. Although most Chow Chows have a gentle and affectionate temperament, and are loyal to their owners, their large size makes them difficult to control, leading many cities to prohibit keeping them as pets. This is a significant factor in why they are often banned.

2. Aggressive Tendencies

Chow Chows are known for their volatile temperament and can easily become aggressive, sometimes attacking without warning. While they are loyal, this tendency to bite makes them less popular, and many pet care facilities consider them a 'blacklisted' breed due to their aggressive behavior. Their unpredictable nature makes them a risk in public spaces.

3. Difficulty in Training

Despite their seemingly docile appearance, Chow Chows are quite stubborn and difficult to train. They are not suitable for novice pet owners. While they might appear cute and cuddly as puppies, their appearance changes as they grow, and their personality can become more challenging. Their stubborn streak makes it hard to implement consistent training, contributing to the ban in many areas.

Disadvantages of Owning a Chow Chow

Chow Chows shed heavily and drool a lot, which has deterred many potential owners. Their thick, dense fur requires daily grooming to remove dirt and debris. Although they don't need frequent baths, each bathing session is a significant undertaking. Due to their unpredictable nature, many pet grooming shops do not accept Chow Chows for services. The maintenance required can be overwhelming for some pet owners. Heavy shedding and drooling contribute to the difficulty of keeping them clean and manageable, leading many to reconsider owning this breed.Learn more:Pet Grooming
