Signs of Successful Pregnancy in Cats

When a cat successfully conceives, several noticeable changes occur. These include the cessation of heat cycles, an increased appetite, and an expanding abdominal area. Once you suspect your cat is pregnant, it’s advisable to take her to the vet for further examination and ensure she receives adequate nutrition.

A key sign of successful conception is the termination of the cat's estrus cycle. You might also notice her licking her vulva or rolling on the ground. In the first ten days of pregnancy, a cat's appetite may initially decrease, and she might experience occasional vomiting. After this, her appetite will gradually increase. About two weeks post-conception, the fur around her nipples may begin to thin, and the nipples will start to become pink and enlarge. Her eating habits will increase, she’ll become more cautious and slow in her movements, less active, and might sleep more. Around one month into the pregnancy, you'll start to observe a noticeable increase in the size and protrusion of her abdomen.

Will My Pregnant Cat Experience Morning Sickness?

Whether a pregnant cat will experience morning sickness varies based on her individual physiology. Some cats may show signs like dry heaving or fetal movement around one month into their pregnancy. These are usually normal and shouldn't cause alarm. Typically, after about one month of pregnancy, you should take your cat to the vet for an ultrasound and X-ray (DR) check. This will determine the number of kittens she is carrying and their developmental stage, as well as help to estimate her due date. Preparation can then be done in advance.
