Labrador Growth Stages: When Do They Become Big Dogs?

Labrador Retrievers typically experience a significant growth spurt between 3 to 6 months of age, reaching their full size around 7 to 8 months old. An adult Labrador can weigh between 25 and 30 kilograms (approximately 55 to 66 pounds). At this stage, it’s recommended to switch to large breed adult dog food, feeding them twice a day at regular intervals.

By seven to eight months, a Labrador will generally reach its adult size, with a weight between 25 and 30 kilograms and a height at the shoulder between 50 to 60 cm (approximately 20 to 24 inches). While the shoulder height remains relatively stable after sexual maturity, their weight might still increase. Although they've reached a large size, it's not recommended to breed them until they are around 1.5 years old, ensuring all organs are fully developed and their skeletal structure is fully formed. Once they reach this stage, they're considered mature adults, ready for breeding if desired. At this point, they should continue to be fed large breed adult dog food twice daily.

What to Expect During a Labrador's Growth Spurt

During their growth spurt between 3 and 6 months, Labradors primarily increase in length and height. Once the skeletal structure is mostly established, they'll start to gain muscle mass in their chest and back. This is a period of rapid development and change.

During this rapid growth phase, Labradors tend to be very playful and energetic, so it is beneficial to increase the time and frequency of walks. Not only does the outdoor environment and sunshine support bone development, but exercise also aids in better sleep patterns. This stage is critical in developing a close bond with the owner and quickly learning commands and good habits. Owners should invest more time and attention as good habits formed during this time will save you time and effort in the future.
