Is a 10-Day-Old Chow Chow Difficult to Care For?
Caring for a 10-day-old Chow Chow is indeed quite challenging because at this tender age, the puppy is still very much dependent on its mother's milk and requires meticulous attention from its human caregiver.

At just 10 days old, a Chow Chow puppy is incredibly vulnerable and requires consistent and careful care. It is strongly advised that owners feed the puppy with specially formulated puppy milk replacer, preferably goat's milk, offering small, frequent meals about every two hours. It's crucial to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to digestive issues in the young pup. Maintaining a suitable ambient temperature is also essential; a range of 22-25°C (72-77°F) is ideal for these tiny pups. At this stage, puppies are unable to eliminate waste on their own, so owners need to gently stimulate the anal and urethral areas with a cotton swab to assist with excretion. This consistent care and attention to detail is vital for a 10-day-old Chow Chow’s survival and healthy growth.
As the puppy grows, you'll need to gradually increase the amount of food it receives. Typically, weaning can begin once the puppy is about a month old. By 45 days of age, milk feedings can usually be discontinued entirely, with the puppy transitioning to a diet of puppy food or milk replacer formulated for their age. The progression from milk to solid food should be handled carefully to ensure the puppy adapts well.
Typically, newborn puppies are cared for by their mothers. If the puppy has been separated from its mother too early, then the responsibility falls to the human owner, to provide the necessary care including adequate nutrients. This supplemental care is essential to strengthen the puppy’s resistance and boost immunity during this crucial phase of development. Proper care and nutrition during this period can make a significant difference in the pup’s health and overall well being, emphasizing the commitment required when taking on the responsibility of caring for such a young Chow Chow.
