How to Prepare a Cozy Winter Nest for Your Hamster
As winter approaches, it's crucial to enhance your hamster's nest with ample bedding materials like wood shavings, paper shreds, or cotton to provide insulation. Additionally, you can craft a special hideaway using old pants. Cut and sew them into a small pouch, generously filling it with cotton to create a warm and comfortable shelter that effectively retains heat.

During the colder months, hamsters instinctively gather available materials within their cage—such as wood shavings, paper shreds, and cotton—to construct a warm and cozy nest. Therefore, as winter draws near, be sure to provide your hamster with an abundance of these materials so they can build their perfect winter haven. You can also create a DIY nest for your hamster. Take a pair of old pants and cut the waistband section into two pieces according to your hamster's size. Layer the two pieces and sew around the edges. Sew one of the bottom ends of the bottom piece closed to create a pouch. Stuff the pouch with cotton, and then sew the remaining end closed. This will create a snug, comfy nest for your furry friend.
Winter Care for Hamsters
1. Monitor the ambient temperature diligently. When temperatures drop, take steps to keep your hamster warm to prevent hypothermia or frostbite. Avoid placing the hamster's cage in drafty areas. If your home is too cold, consider using a space heater or central heating to keep your hamster comfortable, but make sure the cage isn’t directly in the path of the heat or too close to the heat source.
2. In winter, animals need to consume more food to maintain their body heat. It’s important to give your hamster extra protein-rich foods such as mealworms, sunflower seeds, and dried shrimps.
